Kayden and Kennedy

Team Captain: Holly Caudillo

We are running this year in honor of my grandsons, Kayden James Horak-Federly and Kennedy James Wilson.

Our story begins 4 years ago, when Kayden was born still at 30 weeks gestation, on March 19, 2015. Stillbirth was something we had heard of, but never knew it could ever affect us. We didn't know anyone who had lost a baby...or so we thought.

Kayden was so beautiful, so perfect. His red little lips, his button nose, and coppery blonde hair just like his Mama's when she was born. In the few moments we shared with him, we made memories, very much thanks to IRIS,  learned the truth of unconditional love, and keeping memories of our precious Angels alive.

After losing Kayden, my daughter Ciera, became a determined advocate for educating others about loss, and keeping Kayden's memory alive. She was determined to make something good come from her heartache. And she most definitely has.

In early 2019, we learned that Ciera and Kyle were expecting again in Oct. She had been extremely secretive and waited until she was almost in the 2nd trimester to share their news because of previous early miscarriages. But this time was different. This was going to be their rainbow. Things progressed perfectly. She felt great. She had an amazing medical team surrounding her who were determined to make sure she delivered a healthy, breathing, beautiful baby. But fate would not allow it.

On May 14, 2019, Ciera was involved in a head on collision. She was airlifted to the nearest trauma center. The other driver died instantly. When they arrived at the hospital, Kyle and Ciera were able to hear Kennedy's heartbeat...it was very slow...he was in distress. Ciera was bleeding internally, had a broken femur, a huge laceration from her seatbelt, and various cuts, bruises, a fracture in her arm and sprains. Kennedy fought hard to make sure his Mama lived, and he held on long enough for Mommy and Daddy to hear his heart that one last time. He is forever our little hero. He saved his Mamas life. Kennedy James Wilson was born at 20 weeks on May 16, 2019. Tiny and perfect, and loved so very very much. And though IRIS couldn't be there physically due to distance, we are eternally grateful for the time Diana spent helping us to ensure that once again, Ciera and Kyle had everything they needed and deserved throughout this tragedy.

In honor of both of my grandsons, the hard work of IRIS, and the incredibly recovery of my amazing daughter (fitness being a huge factor), I determined that I AM RUNNING the 2019 5k Turkey Trot! As an extra squishy middle aged woman, my child inspired me. If she could be so physically strong 4 months after a broken femur, there is no reason I can't be fit enough to run 3.1 miles. So this year, for the 1st time, I am choosing to run. Anyone is welcome to join my run with me. We will also have a walking team lead.

I am also hoping we can raise some money for IRIS along the way. They have become such an important part of our lives. They've helped through both Kayden and Kennedy. We've made lifelong friends. We've gotten involved in committees and attended various events. IRIS has become so much more to us, and we'd love to give back to help them so they can reach more and help more. Any donation is appreciated.

Thanks for reading our story, and hope to see you out there on Thanksgiving morning!
